For some women, the notion of marrying a foreign man, particularly a man from Europe, brings about a sense of euphoria. In general, people tend to give a strong benefit of the doubt towards things they are unaware or unsure of. For example, studies have shown that people almost always overestimate how much money people who appear to be affluent have. So someone attractive who is dressed very well and eating in a nice restaurant will usually bring about guesses in people’s minds that they must have a really high paying job or be a millionaire. In reality, this is the case far less often than people would think.
This same prinicipal can be applied to European men. People in Europe are generally thinner than Americans. This is because their food isn’t as good and they are not as wealthy as Americans. As a result of their thin physiques, they are usually more attractive than your average American man. Additionally, there is more emphasis in Europe on fashion, so the end result is a bunch of really good looking guys.
As stated before, people tend to give a heavy benefit of the doubt to those who they view as attractive. So if attraction is in place, which is the case with many European men, it is assumed that they also have high-income jobs and are very chivalrous towards women. This is just simply not true.
For one, men in Europe, on average, have much less money than American men. Not only do they have lower incomes but their cost of living is also higher. In short, European men have much less discretionary resources than American men. Regarding their treatment towards women, “chick flicks” (many of them staring Hugh Grant or Jude Law) have distributed this fallacy that European men are very charming and treat women really well. Again, this is just simply not true.
In actuality, it is not uncommon for European men to be womanizers who harbor very little respect towards the opposite gender. There are probably many reasons for this, but certainly a big reason is rooted in the economics of their culture. Most European countries are far more socialist than America (at least historically speaking). In America, women are typically looked after by men. In Europe, women are looked after more by the government. The result of this is a continent of men who are not fully accustomed to the thought of being a woman’s caretaker. Instead, they tend to view women as a conquest or a means to a good time.
To conclude, European men are just not husband material. It is okay to fantasize about them and date them, just keep hold of your senses because at the end of the day, you might just be another notch on the bedpost to them despite how good they are at charming you into thinking otherwise.
